At the place where the ancient acropolis was, the reference landmark of Rethymno and the largest fortress in Crete, it dominates the town, overlooking the sea and the town, offering wonderful views to the coast and the whole town. It was built in1573 by the Venetians, to protect the population of the town against the pirate raids. Today the outer fortifications of the Fortezza and Ibrahim Han Mosque inside the fortress, stay almost intact. The buildings are mostly in ruins but some buildings are in constant renovation. The walk along the castle, from the side of the sea, at sunset, offers a glorious view of its impressive defending walls and ramparts,-which become illuminated at night, together with romantic images of the coast.
During the summer, many cultural events take place in the large open-air theatre Erofili, inside the Fortezza.
